The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Waidi Shaibu has reaffirmed his commitment to prioritising troops’ welfare as the strength of the Nigerian Army ultimately depends on the well-being, morale and preparedness of its soldiers.

He commended the troops of the Nigerian Army for their bravery, resilience and unwavering dedication in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other security challenges in the country.

Shaibu spoke on Saturday, when he hosted soldiers serving in Abuja to a combined interfaith breaking of the fast.

The COAS paid glowing tribute to frontline troops deployed in the North East, North West, North Central and other operational theatres for their sacrifices and steadfastness in defending the nation.

He observed that the coinciding sacred seasons of Ramadan and Lent serve as profound reminders of sacrifice, patience, discipline and compassion, virtues that resonate strongly with the professional ethos of the Nigerian soldier.

Shaibu acknowledged that many personnel observing these holy periods continue to perform their duties in demanding operational environments, demonstrating remarkable dedication and patriotism.

The Army chief stressed the importance of leadership by example and sound administration as key pillars of his command philosophy, which emphasises troops’ welfare, the well-being of their families, the morale and preparedness of soldiers.

He said, “Within this vision, two pillars remain especially critical to the success of the Nigerian Army.

These are leadership by example and sound administration, with a strong commitment to troops’ welfare. I am determined to make troops’ welfare our topmost priority.”

He continued, “Leadership in the Nigerian Army under my stewardship must therefore be visible, responsible and value-driven at every level. Equally important is sound administration and the continuous improvement of the welfare of our troops, because the strength of the Nigerian Army ultimately lies in the well-being, morale and preparedness of its soldiers.

“We will therefore remain committed to improving training standards, ensuring operational readiness and providing the necessary support systems that will enable you and your families to thrive,” he said

Earlier, the Chief of Administration (Army), Maj-Gen. Isa Abdullahi, described the gathering as a strong symbol of unity, mutual respect and shared purpose among soldiers of different faiths serving under one flag.

He noted that the simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent reflects enduring values of sacrifice, discipline, reflection and compassion, principles that closely align with the demands of military service.

Maj-Gen. Abdullahi added that the interfaith breaking of fast goes beyond a ceremonial event, as it reinforces fellowship and solidarity among troops irrespective of background or belief.
