Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have criticised royal biographer Tom Bower over claims made in his forthcoming book about tensions within the British royal family.
The couple reacted through a spokesperson following the publication of extracts from Bower’s upcoming book, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family.
In the extracts, the author reportedly makes several allegations about the couple’s relationship with senior members of the monarchy, including King Charles III and Prince William, the Prince of Wales.
According to the book, Queen Camilla allegedly described Meghan as a “divisive agent” who had influenced Prince Harry, while suggesting that other members of the royal family viewed the Duchess of Sussex as a potential threat to the institution’s stability.
Responding to the claims, the Sussexes’ spokesperson dismissed the allegations and criticised the author’s portrayal of the couple.
“Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added that the author had gone beyond criticism and was instead promoting narratives about people he had never met.
Tom Bower, a former BBC journalist, is known for writing unauthorised biographies about prominent public figures.
He previously authored Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors in 2022, which also generated debate about the relationship between the Sussexes and other members of the royal family.
The new book is expected to examine the ongoing tensions between Prince Harry and senior royals, as well as the couple’s life and business ventures in the United States following their relocation to California in 2020.
