Governor Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State has ordered all political appointees and members of the State Executive Council intending to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions on or before March 26, 2026.

The directive was issued on Wednesday during a State Executive Council meeting, with the governor emphasizing the need to separate governance from personal political ambitions.

“As Governor of Cross River State, I have directed that any member of the State Executive Council, as well as all political appointees who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections, must resign on or before March 26, 2026,” Otu said.

He stressed that holding public office is a “sacred trust” that must not be compromised by political pursuits, adding that governance should remain the primary focus of those entrusted with leadership responsibilities.

“Our people deserve undivided attention, and this administration will not allow political distractions to hinder service delivery,” he stated, underscoring the importance of discipline and commitment in public service.

The governor clarified that the decision was not punitive but rooted in principles designed to ensure fairness and protect institutional integrity.

“This decision is not punitive; it is principled. It aligns with global best practices and ensures a level playing field for all aspirants while safeguarding the integrity of government institutions,” he explained.

Otu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to development, noting ongoing efforts to drive economic diversification, strengthen partnerships, and boost internally generated revenue across the state.

He also called for strict compliance with the directive, urging affected officials to prioritize the collective interest of the state over personal ambitions.

“Together, let us uphold accountability, discipline, and selfless service. The progress of our dear state must always come before personal ambition,” he added.

The directive follows a similar stance by President Bola Tinubu, who recently advised political appointees at the federal level with ambitions for the 2027 elections to step down by March 31.
