The Kano State government has disbursed N7.4 million to families of victims of the 2025 Uromi community attack in Edo State, in fulfilment of a pledge made by Governor Abba Yusuf.

The financial support was presented yesterday at the palace of the district head of Bunkure in Bunkure local government area of the state.

Representing the governor, the commissioner for information and internal affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said the gesture was part of government’s commitment to cushion the hardship faced by families of the deceased and survivors of the tragic incident.

Waiya disclosed that 16 families of those who lost their lives received N300,000 each while 13 survivors were given N200,000 each, in addition to food items, including two bags of rice per beneficiary.

He explained that the intervention was in line with the governor’s earlier promise when he visited the community to commiserate with the victims shortly after the attack.

According to him, the governor had initially believed the pledge had been redeemed, but upon discovering otherwise, directed immediate action to ensure the support reached the beneficiaries.

“We are here to redeem the pledge made by His Excellency when he visited and sympathised with the families of those affected by the tragic Uromi killings,” Waiya stated.

He described the incident, which claimed 16 lives and left 13 others injured, as a national tragedy, noting that the victims were attacked by a mob while returning to the North.

The commissioner also assured that efforts were ongoing to ensure compensation promised by the Edo State government is paid, revealing that a dedicated account had already been opened for that purpose.

He expressed optimism that the compensation would be released soon, adding that both state governments remained committed to justice and support for the victims.

Waiya urged the affected families to remain patient, assuring them of government’s continued support.

In his remarks, the district head of Bunkure, Alhaji Aminu Umar, commended the state government for fulfilling its promise and prayed for sustained peace and prosperity in the state.

He also offered prayers for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the incident.

The victims, mostly hunters from Kano State, were attacked in Uromi, Edo State, by a vigilante group after being mistaken for kidnappers while travelling home for Sallah celebrations.
