Iran said Tuesday it successfully tested a new air defense system modeled after the U.S. Hawk system during a drill in the country's east. A senior Iranian official called the six-day air defense drill over almost the entire eastern half of the country a "slap" to America and Israel. The exercise has been said to include Iranian jet fighters, drones and more than 8,000 troops. (AP Photo/Mehr News Agency, Majid Asgaripour)

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have launched a missile attack on Israel, opening a new front in the escalating conflict linked to the war involving Iran.

The group fired a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting what it described as sensitive Israeli military sites in the south, marking its first direct strike since the conflict intensified.

Israel’s military said it intercepted one of the missiles, as air raid sirens blared across areas including Beersheba and regions near a key nuclear research facility. No casualties or damage were immediately reported.

Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, confirmed the attack, warning that strikes would continue until their objectives are achieved and hostilities against allied forces cease.

The assault follows earlier signals from the group that it was preparing to join the widening war, a move that could significantly deepen instability across the Middle East.

Analysts warn the development could have far-reaching global consequences. The Houthis, who control Yemen’s capital Sanaa, have previously disrupted Red Sea shipping routes—one of the world’s most critical trade corridors.

Officials within the group have now hinted at a possible blockade of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a strategic chokepoint through which a significant portion of global trade and Israeli imports pass. Any disruption there could send shockwaves through international markets and supply chains.

Experts say a coordinated closure of key maritime routes—including the Bab al-Mandeb, Strait of Hormuz, and potentially the Suez Canal—would mark a dangerous escalation with global economic implications.

The development also complicates US military positioning in the region, particularly with the presence of major naval assets that could be drawn into a broader confrontation.

With Israel already engaged on multiple fronts, including exchanges with Hezbollah in Lebanon, the entry of the Houthis raises fears of a wider regional war, as observers expect possible Israeli retaliation in the coming days.
