As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu celebrated his 74th birthday on Saturday, basketball promoter and developer Igoche Mark joined the well-wishers, specifically commending the President’s influence on Nigerian sport.

In a statement he personally signed, Mark, a former basketball player and contender in the Nigeria Basketball Federation election, asserted that the “Renewed Hope” agenda has started to rebuild athlete confidence, which had been eroded by years of unpaid allowances and inadequate welfare.

“Mr President’s recognition of sacrifice and reform resonates deeply with us in sport,” Mark stated. “For the first time in a long while, athletes are seeing welfare placed at the forefront of the national conversation, and that has restored faith.”

Tinubu’s birthday message thanked Nigerians for their solidarity, noting “a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel” from economic reforms. Mark connected this optimism to recent enhancements in training facilities, prompt stipends for continental competitions, and ongoing dialogue between the National Sports Commission and various federations.

“In basketball, we’ve certainly felt the shift,” he added. “Players now have the assurance that allowances will be paid, and that certainty transforms performance.”

Tinubu, who observed the day without elaborate celebrations, pledged to tackle national challenges with the support of citizens. Mark indicated that sports leaders would mirror this determination by promoting transparency and athlete-centric policies.

The birthday, Tinubu’s third whilst in office, garnered messages of goodwill from across the nation. For Mark and other sports administrators, the hope is that the President’s 74th year will solidify the progress that is making Nigerian sport “the pride of Africa.”
