An appeal for integrity and accountability in leadership echoed at the E-Governance Training Centre over the weekend as the Halal Cooperative Union inaugurated its new executive members.

The event, which included a public lecture on “Public Leadership: Ethics and Competence in Islamic Stewardship,” saw prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Tajudeen Adigun Bello championing ethical conduct and service.

Sheikh Bello, chairman of the FCT Council of Ulamas, underscored that leadership in Islam is an “Amanah” – a sacred trust demanding sincerity, justice, transparency and profound responsibility.

He urged leaders to be guided by moral integrity, adhere to Islamic principles and deliver impactful service, stressing the importance of fairness, anti-corruption, and inclusive decision-making.

The ceremony also saw the inauguration of the union’s new executive. Engr. Abdulwahid Kolawole was sworn in as president, supported by Shafi’u Badmus and Mallam Mukhtar Adamu as vice presidents I and II respectively. Mallam Alfa Usman assumed the role of secretary-general, with Ibrahim Lawal Runka as assistant secretary. Mallam Murtala O. Yusuf took office as financial secretary, alongside Hajara Usman as assistant financial secretary and Malama Zuwaira Aiyetobo as public relations officer.

Further strengthening the union’s governance, a Shura Committee was established to provide guidance. Sheikh Bello will chair the committee, with members including Prof. Adam Muhammad Abubakar, Prof. Abdulrazak Abdulmajeed, Engr. Abdulwahid Kolawole, Ismail Gambo, Alhaji Lanrewaju Oladejo and Mallam Abdulmuiz Layeni.

The event ended with an emphasis on unity, cooperation and adherence to Islamic ethical standards in leadership and organisational endeavours.
