Kaduna Assembly Passes Electricity Regulatory Commission Bill

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has passed a bill to establish the Kaduna State Electricity Regulatory Commission, alongside a commercial and technical framework for the state’s electricity market.

The bill was passed at its third reading during plenary presided over by the speaker, Hon. Dahiru Liman, following the adoption of a report presented by the chairman of the Joint Committee on Public Works, Infrastructure and Judiciary, Muhammad Nasiru.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the plenary, Nasiru said the bill, once implemented, would promote green technology and ensure a sustainable supply of electricity across the state.

He added that the bill would also guarantee a safe, reliable and efficient interconnection of the state electricity market in line with federal regulations.

Nasiru further noted that the commission would provide oversight and technical support to electricity operators in the State, ensuring strict compliance with industry standards while safeguarding consumers’ interests.

He added that the initiative is expected to attract private sector investment and strengthen Kaduna’s electricity infrastructure, boosting reliability and promoting sustainable growth in the sector.

Similarly, a bill seeking to repeal the Tax Codification and Consolidation Law, No. 16 of 2020, scaled through second reading and was referred to the relevant committee for detailed consideration.
