Ethiopian runner Habtamu Birhane has made history by winning the maiden Yenagoa City International 10KM Race in Bayelsa State, Nigeria.
He crossed the finish line in a swift 29 minutes and 23 seconds, securing the top prize of $5,000.
Birhane’s triumph was followed by Nigerian athletes Gang James (29:59) and Francis James (30:16), who clinched second and third places, earning $3,000 and $2,000 respectively.
The women’s race saw Ethiopian dominance, with Shewaye Dugo Tolosa (33:50), Tigist Girma (34:07), and Gacasho Jilo (34:57) sweeping the top three positions.
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri commended the organisers, Nilayo Sports Management, and the State Sports Ministry for a successful event. “This race has come to stay in Bayelsa, and we’ll do our best to improve on the next edition,” he stated, highlighting the event’s potential to elevate the state’s global sporting profile.
Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, CEO of Nilayo Sports Management, thanked Governor Diri for his backing, asserting, “We’re committed to organising remarkable long-distance race events that showcase Bayelsa’s hospitality and sporting excellence.”
