Chibuike Nwaiwu couldn’t conceal his delight after netting the decisive goal in Trabzonspor’s thrilling 2-1 victory over Galatasaray on Saturday evening. The Nigeria international’s 62nd-minute header proved to be the difference in a pulsating Turkish Super Lig encounter.
Trabzonspor had initially taken the lead through Nwaiwu’s compatriot, Paul Onuachu, who opened the scoring in the fourth minute. However, Ivory Coast international Wilfried Singho restored parity for Galatasaray early in the second half, setting the stage for Nwaiwu’s heroics. The centre-back rose highest to power home a free-kick delivered by another Nigerian, Anthony Nwakaeme, separating the two fierce rivals.
Speaking after the match, Nwaiwu emphasised the importance of his positioning: “I’m really happy that I was able to score. But the most important factor in being able to score headers was being in the right position. Because I was in the right position, I was able to hit the ball,” he explained.
