The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has announced plans to commemorate the 2026 Olympic Day with nationwide activities scheduled for Saturday, 27 June.
The annual event, organised under the global framework of Olympic Solidarity, will be coordinated in collaboration with the NOC’s Sport-For-All Commission. It is aimed at promoting the importance of physical activity while reinforcing the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.
According to the committee, the celebration will provide Nigerians of all ages with an opportunity to participate in simple but impactful exercises such as walking and jogging, which contribute to improved fitness, mental wellbeing and stress reduction.
Chairman of the Sport-For-All Commission, Dr Abdul Ibrahim, stated that this year’s campaign places a strong emphasis on inclusivity and the social benefits of exercise. He encouraged participants to involve others, stressing that shared physical activity enhances both motivation and enjoyment.
Following what organisers described as record participation in 2025, the NOC has issued invitations to all states of the federation. State Sports Councils have been urged to commence early preparations to ensure broad participation and impactful engagement across the country.
NOC President, Habu Ahmed Gumel, noted that the 2026 edition seeks to bridge generational divides by using sport and physical activity to foster stronger connections between young people and older citizens.
The committee also called on corporate organisations and philanthropists to support the initiative through funding and partnerships. It added that such collaboration would not only enhance public health outcomes but also offer partners increased visibility and alignment with a unifying national cause.
Olympic Day is celebrated globally each year to encourage mass participation in sport and physical activity, while promoting the core ideals of the Olympic Movement.
