The Democratic Republic of the Congo have issued a bold warning ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Sports Minister Didier Bodembo declaring that his country intends to spoil what is widely expected to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s final appearance on football’s biggest stage.

The Leopards booked their place at the expanded tournament—set to be hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada—after a demanding qualification campaign. Their reward is a place in Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia.

However, rather than adopting a cautious approach, Bodembo has struck a defiant tone, insisting his side will not be overawed by Ronaldo’s global stature or illustrious career.

“Qualifying for the World Cup was not easy; we fought for every point,” he said. “But the fight is just beginning. In our first match, Cristiano Ronaldo will be in tears.”

The remark underscores DR Congo’s ambition to emerge as one of the tournament’s surprise packages. While Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, is widely expected to use the competition as a final opportunity to claim the one major trophy missing from his collection, the Congolese are determined to disrupt that narrative.

The fixture has already been framed as a potential emotional clash, pitting an African side eager to make history against one of football’s greatest-ever players seeking a fairytale farewell.
