Preparations for the 2026 National Schools Football Championship have accelerated significantly, with a surge in registrations signalling a major milestone ahead of the nationwide competition.

The tournament, endorsed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), is designed to provide a structured platform for young students to showcase their talents while strengthening the development pipeline for Nigeria’s Under-15 and Under-17 national teams.

The competition is scheduled to kick off in May across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Participating schools will first compete at state level before progressing to regional stages. Winners from the six geopolitical zones will then converge in Abuja for the grand finale in June 2026, featuring both boys’ and girls’ categories.

Chief Executive Officer of the Kickstart Sports Foundation, Ibrahim Bello, described the initiative as a long-term investment in Nigerian football. He emphasised that the project goes beyond talent discovery, focusing on structured player development. According to Bello, standout performers will undergo advanced training under top coaches and gain exposure to both local and international scouts.

He also underscored the collaboration with key stakeholders, particularly the NFF, noting that national team coaches, alongside representatives from international academies and clubs, will be present to scout emerging talents throughout the tournament.

Bello further highlighted that the championship is a landmark initiative, distinguished by its strict adherence to age verification, safeguarding standards and gender inclusivity. Participation is limited exclusively to school-based athletes, while the integration of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) biometric verification is expected to eliminate age fraud and enhance the competition’s credibility.

In addition, the championship will serve as a capacity-building platform for Physical Education teachers, who will receive specialised training and the opportunity to obtain certified football coaching licences.
