The Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) has unveiled plans to provide housing for retiring officers and promote farming initiatives as part of efforts to improve the welfare of personnel in the Nigeria Police Force.
The Executive Secretary of the Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday during a reception for the management of LEADERSHIP, led by its Group Managing Director, Muazu Elazeh.
Sheidu said the housing scheme is designed to ensure that officers exiting active service have decent accommodation, addressing a long-standing welfare concern within the Force. He added that the agricultural initiative would encourage officers to engage in farming, both as a source of food security and an additional stream of income.
He also called for improved public trust in the Nigeria Police Force in carrying out its duties. Sheidu said that since the creation of the Trust Fund, the organisation has maintained its focus on equipping and training the police, as well as on providing facilities and assets to the Nigeria Police Force, but he believes that Nigerians need greater trust in the Force.
According to him, “The Nigeria Police Force needs public trust to carry out its duties effectively. As I have always said, there is a need to support the Nigeria Police Force, and the betterment of the Police Force is the betterment of everyone.”
Speaking on the critical role of the media in society, while commending LEADERSHIP for its contribution to journalism, he said, “We are ready to partner with the media and LEADERSHIP to ensure that we rebuild public trust in the Nigeria Police Force. The partnership with LEADERSHIP is to see how we can portray the Nigeria Police Force in a better light, considering the work they are doing and the importance of the Force to the country.”
The director of fund mobilisation and partnership, NPTF, Sanusi Aliyu, commended Sheidu for his visionary leadership.
Earlier, the Group Managing Director of LEADERSHIP told the NPTF management team that the visit aimed to appreciate the organisation’s good work in repositioning the Nigeria Police Force.
Elazeh also said the media has observed the remarkable activities and commendable work the NPTF has been carrying out, and assured the organisation of LEADERSHIP’s support in promoting its stories and activities.
He said, “We have observed the outstanding work the Executive Secretary and the management of the NPTF have been doing, and you deserve all the support you can get. We are ready to partner with you to project these good works you have been doing.”
