MmThe Jigawa State Government has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving additional relief materials and empowerment equipment for about 700 households affected by the 2025 flooding in the state.
The State Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwal Sankara, gave the commendation while speaking to journalists during the flag-off of the distribution of the relief materials.
Sankara said the intervention demonstrated the President’s concern for the welfare of Nigerians and his commitment to improving the living conditions of flood-affected communities.
He recalled that following the flooding last year, the Jigawa State Government, through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), promptly distributed relief materials to affected residents.
According to him, the state government provided more than 11,000 bags of rice, beans and maize in 10kg and 25kg sizes, alongside cash assistance and other food items to hundreds of flood victims.
He added that agricultural inputs, including improved seeds, were distributed to help affected farmers resume cultivation, secure fresh harvests and strengthen food security.
The commissioner explained that the latest intervention was part of the federal government’s Special Intervention on Post-2025 Flood Disaster Relief Assistance to States, aimed at mitigating the impact of flooding on affected communities and supporting the recovery of vulnerable households.
He said President Tinubu approved the additional assistance through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to improve the livelihoods of residents affected by the disaster.
Sankara listed the items distributed to the approximately 700 beneficiary households as 500 bags of 25kg rice, 250 cartons of spaghetti containing 20 packs of 500g each, 500 foam mattresses, 250 cartons of vegetable oil containing four 5-litre containers each, 250 nylon mats and 250 blankets.
The intervention also included 54 pumping machines, 48 grinding machines, 40 sewing machines and 10 cargo tricycles.
While the food and household items are intended to provide immediate relief, the equipment could help beneficiaries restore their livelihoods and resume income-generating activities following the flooding.
Sankara said officials from NEMA collaborated with the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant stakeholders to coordinate the distribution exercise.
Representatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Red Cross, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) also participated in the exercise.
The commissioner reiterated the state government’s appreciation to the President and the Federal Government for the intervention, stressing the importance of sustained assistance to communities recovering from natural disasters.
