As the rainy season approaches, most people focus on buying umbrellas and waterproof footwear. However, for tailors and fashion entrepreneurs, the season presents a lucrative opportunity to boost income by meeting the growing demand for practical, weather-friendly clothing.

A Lagos-based fashion designer, Romoke Ojo, says sewing clothes tailored for wet conditions is not only about style but also a smart business strategy.

According to her, understanding fabric selection is the first step to success in the rainy-season clothing market.

“Designers who want to make money during this period must prioritise lightweight and quick-drying fabrics. Heavy materials like denim and thick cotton absorb water and take too long to dry, making them less attractive to customers,” she explained.

Instead, she recommends polyester blends and treated cotton, which are more suitable for damp conditions and appeal to buyers looking for convenience and durability.

Beyond fabric choice, Ojo noted that functionality is a major selling point.

“In a city like Lagos, where sudden downpours are common, customers prefer clothes that are easy to manage. Shorter hemlines, ankle-length trousers, and tapered designs are practical and reduce exposure to mud. These are the kinds of features people are willing to pay for,” she said.

She added that designers who pay attention to these details can differentiate their products and attract repeat customers.

Colour selection also plays a role in market demand. Dark shades such as black, navy blue, and charcoal are more popular during the rainy season because they hide stains better and require less maintenance.

“Customers are more likely to buy clothes that are easy to maintain. When you design with darker tones, you’re indirectly helping them save money, and that increases the value of your product,” Ojo noted.

Another profitable area is outerwear. According to her, there is a steady demand for durable raincoats and waterproof jackets.

“Many people are tired of buying cheap raincoats that spoil after a short time. Designers who can produce quality, long-lasting outerwear have a strong advantage in the market,” she said.

She also advised tailors to consider how garments pair with footwear, as wet shoes can
