The District Head of Bogoro local government area of Bauchi State, Mr Nuhu Tafida, has banned the sale and consumption of alcohol in the communities under his domain, in a decisive move to curb alcohol abuse, protect public health and curtail criminality.
Mr Tafida announced the directive during a sensitisation programme for beer parlour owners, alcohol sellers and other community stakeholders in his palace in Bogoro.
Mr Tafida explained that the alcohol ban is part of a broader effort to tackle low birth rate, cultism, gang related violence, drug abuse, theft and street fights which have led to deaths and destruction of property.
To ensure full enforcement, the district head has ordered the closure of all joints within 21 days, vowing to sanction all defaulters of the order.
”As leaders, the responsibilities of the communities are in our hands; every leader will give the account of his stewardship before his creator,” he said.
He further sought the support of traditional rulers, religious leaders and healthcare workers to eradicate the use of the crime-inducing substance in the community.
Speaking on the risk of substance abuse, the health educator, Bogoro local government area, Mr Dogara Ayuba, described alcohol as harmful and hazardous leading to physical, social and emotional damages.
Mr Ayuba further outlined causes and factors associated with substance abuse to include genetic predisposition, peer pressure, environmental stress, lack of social support and curiosity.
According to him, the key preventive strategies to substance abuse include family-based approach, skills development, peer pressure resistance, community policies, promotion of healthy lifestyle and awareness.
He stated that substance abuse is considered treatable through counseling, therapy and rehabilitation programmes.
In their separate contributions, the chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bogoro chapter, Pastor Amos Silas and the Chief Imam of Bogoro, Mohammed Ghani, commended the district head for the prompt action taken describing it has a right decision to salvage the future of the land from collapsing.
They promised to keep sensitising their members in various places of worship to raise a spiritual-minded and God-fearing generation.
Speaking on behalf of the alcohol sellers, Mr Haruna John appreciated the district head for the great decisions, promising to abide by all the prescribed laws put in place.
