LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: Maryam Lawan Gwadabe — Shaping Northern Nigeria’s Digital Renaissance

In the heart of Kano, where tradition often meets the rapid pulse of modern commerce, one woman is rewriting the narrative of what it means to be a tech leader in Northern Nigeria. Maryam Lawan Gwadabe, the visionary founder of Blue Sapphire Hub, isn’t just building software; she’s building an entire ecosystem of “dare dreamers.”

Every great tech story has a humble beginning, and Maryam’s is no exception. Armed with a B.Sc. in Computer Software Engineering from Coventry University and a Master’s from Middlesex University, she returned to Nigeria with a mission. In 2014, with just #150,000 and a packed living room, she began teaching basic ICT skills.

When her classes grew too large for her home, her father—an agronomist who instilled in her the value of “planting” ideas to see them grow—helped her establish what would become the first female-owned innovation centre in Northern Nigeria: Blue Sapphire Hub.

Blue Sapphire Hub has evolved into a launchpad for social and economic transformation. It’s a place where the “mindset shift” Maryam often speaks of becomes a reality. The Hub focuses on several critical pillars:

Capacity Building: From basic digital literacy to advanced coding and AI-driven learning solutions.

Startup Incubation: Providing mentorship and consultancy to help young entrepreneurs scale their ideas.

Social Impact Platforms: Recently, the Hub launched the Strengthened Leadership Aware Citizen Digital Dashboard, a platform that allows Kano residents to track government projects and budgets in real-time, bridging the gap between the street and the state house.

Maryam is a fierce advocate for bridging the digital gender divide. Through initiatives like “Women on Wednesday” and the “ICT Solutions for Her” forum, she has personally trained over 5,000 women.

Her work hasn’t gone unnoticed. A former member of the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 list, Maryam was recently appointed as the Special Adviser to the Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy. In this role, she is taking her local expertise in Kano to the national stage, helping shape the policies that will define Nigeria’s digital future.

The journey wasn’t always smooth. Maryam openly shares stories of the early days when she couldn’t pay salaries and watched her staff dwindle down to a single loyal employee. Yet, it is this grit—this “Northern stars” resilience—that defines her.
