A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced a 23-year-old man, Kabir Adamu, to eight years imprisonment without the option of fine for attempting to smuggle cannabis into the court premises.
The conviction followed his arrest on 14 January 2026, at the Kano State High Court on Miller Road, where officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service intercepted a quantity of cannabis sativa concealed inside a loaf of bread. The illicit substance was reportedly intended for a defendant identified as “Wizzy,” who was standing trial at the time.
The suspect and the exhibit were subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, for further investigation and prosecution.
Delivering judgment on 22 April 2026, Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court, Court One, Kano, found Adamu guilty and handed down the eight-year custodial sentence.
Reacting to the judgment, the Commander of NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, CN D.Y. Lawal, commended the court for what he described as a decisive ruling against drug-related offences. He said the conviction reflects the growing synergy between law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in tackling substance abuse and criminal activities.
According to him, the judgment sends a strong warning to individuals seeking to exploit sensitive environments such as court premises and correctional facilities for illegal drug activities.
“This ruling underscores our collective resolve to prevent criminal elements from undermining public safety and institutional order. It will serve as a deterrent to others,” Lawal stated.
He also expressed appreciation to the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, for his continued leadership and commitment to strengthening the agency’s operations nationwide.
The NDLEA further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support efforts to combat drug trafficking by providing timely information to authorities.
