The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has said improved funding and timely release of appropriated resources to the military are critical to reversing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Agbese, who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Sunday, also commended the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, for what he described as a focused and results-driven approach to tackling insecurity.
According to him, while the Armed Forces have continued to demonstrate resilience, the success of military operations largely depends on the availability and timely disbursement of funds.
“Our military is doing an extraordinary job under very demanding conditions. However, no matter how committed our troops are, military operations require consistent funding, timely releases, and access to modern equipment,” he said.
The lawmaker noted that recent gains across various theatres of operation, including intensified offensives against insurgents and criminal groups, reflect a renewed strategic direction under the current military leadership.
He said the defence leadership has improved coordination, enhanced troop morale, and strengthened intelligence-driven operations across the services.
“What we are seeing is a leadership that is not only committed but also strategic. There is better coordination and a clear determination to confront these threats decisively,” he added.
Agbese acknowledged the progress made in degrading insurgent capabilities, disrupting supply networks, and reclaiming territories, but warned that sustaining such gains requires uninterrupted financial support.
“Appropriations alone are not enough. What matters is the speed and consistency of releases. Delays can slow down operations and give criminal elements the opportunity to regroup,” he said.
He called on relevant government institutions to prioritise defence funding, describing it as essential to national stability.
The lawmaker also urged Nigerians to support the Armed Forces through cooperation and the provision of credible intelligence, stressing that public participation remains vital to security efforts.
“Our troops are making sacrifices daily to keep the country safe. Citizens must support them by working with security agencies,” he said.
Agbese expressed optimism that with sustained funding, strong leadership, and national collaboration, Nigeria can make significant progress in tackling insurgency and restoring peace.
