Sheringham Slams Spurs’ Sacking of Postecoglou

Manchester United icon Teddy Sheringham has launched a fierce defense of former Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, insisting that the club made a monumental error in firing the Australian coach even after a dismal 17th-place finish in the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Postecoglou did manage to lift the Europa League trophy during his tenure, ending Spurs’ long drought for silverware. However, the club’s board decided to part ways with him shortly afterward, citing unacceptable league form and fears of being dragged into a relegation scrap.

In a chat with Tribal Football, Sheringham argued that the decision was short-sighted, pointing to a crippling injury crisis among Tottenham’s key defenders as the real cause of their league collapse. He believes Postecoglou deserved more time to build on his European success.

“Ange Postecoglou must still be sitting at home thinking, ‘how did I lose my Tottenham job?’” Sheringham said. “He told everyone he would win something within two years, and he delivered. That’s exactly what he did.”

The former England striker continued: “Tottenham haven’t won a major trophy for a very long time. So when a manager finally brings one to the club, he somehow gets the sack. It makes no sense to me. Why isn’t he still in charge?”

Sheringham acknowledged that last season’s league position was far from acceptable, but he defended Postecoglou’s approach. “He put all his eggs in one basket to win something, because that was his priority. We all want to win trophies. I’m still mystified by the decision to replace him, even now.”

Reflecting on what could have been, Sheringham added: “It would be fascinating to see where Spurs would be if he had stayed. I’m not saying they should go back to him—not at this point but we’ll never know what could have happened. That’s the real shame.”
