Declares Senate bid
Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, has said the recent Supreme Court judgement on the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has prevented all factions from taking over the leadership control of the party.
Reacting to the judgement, the governor stated that neither his camp led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, nor those loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, achieved total victory.
He, however, expressed satisfaction that efforts by his camp helped stop what he described as an attempt by Wike to take over the PDP.
“We have succeeded in ensuring that no single individual hijacks the party,” he said.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service published on Saturday, Governor Mohammed said, “As democrats who respect the rule of law, we accept the judgement. But it is not a victory for anyone,” he said.
On the future of the PDP, the governor explained that the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) would temporarily oversee its affairs in line with its constitution until a caretaker committee is constituted.
He also accused Wike of working against the PDP, claiming the FCT minister and his associates have ties with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), an allegation Wike has not publicly denied or confirmed.
Mohammed revealed that he and his supporters were considering leaving the PDP to pursue their political ambitions on another platform ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to him, the decision was aimed at giving his supporters the opportunity to contest elective positions without uncertainty.
“Our hearts remain with the PDP, but politically we must move forward,” he said.
The governor confirmed his intention to contest for the Bauchi South Senatorial District seat in 2027, adding that consultations were ongoing with alternative political parties.
“We are engaging with parties that are stable and free of internal crises so our supporters can contest elections without obstacles,” he added.
Governor Bala Mohammed further alleged that there were deliberate efforts to weaken opposition parties ahead of the elections, stressing the need for strategic political decisions.
He assured supporters that a clear direction would soon be announced regarding the political platform they will adopt.
