Medics at the boxing event of the ongoing 21st National Sports Festival, tagged ‘Delta 2022’ have said the death of Igboargo Chucks, Imo State boxer, has nothing to do with the bout.
Chucks took on Prince Gaby Amagor of Delta State in the 86kg bout at Event Centre in Asaba. He was said to be walking out of the hall when he suddenly collapsed.
Medics placed him on oxygen and tried to stabilise him but he died before getting to the hospital.
Medics said they battled to save his life after he collapsed after he had finished his bout.
Secretary-general of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Akinyele Durotoye, said it’s one of those tragedies at sports venues with athletes having underlying health conditions.
“It is unfortunate we lost him, but his death has nothing to do with the bout. His coach was with him but stepped out to get some equipment momentarily, unsuspecting the boxer was in danger.”
“He was well and okay and didn’t show any sign of distress,” Durotoye said.
