The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) are launching investigations into possible cause of fire on gas pipelines in Lagos”

Emergency responders successfully contained a major fire along a Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited gas pipeline on Agege Motor Road.

The LASEMA activated a full-scale response after receiving distress calls through the state’s toll-free emergency lines.

The LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team arrived at the Ile Zik scene in Agege at approximately 3:13 a.m. to find the NNPCL gas pipeline engulfed in flames.

The cause of the pipeline blaze has not yet been determined.

Investigators from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said they are working alongside NNPCL safety officials to find the source, reports Pipeline Technology Journal (PTJ).

The LASEMA confirmed that no injuries or deaths have been recorded. Officials credited the zero-casualty rate to the swift deployment of responders who quickly evacuated the area and secured a perimeter to protect nearby residents, motorists, and businesses.

Responders established containment lines to stop the pipeline fire from spreading to neighboring residential buildings, filling stations, and other critical infrastructure. Traffic officials also implemented detours to ease congestion around the active zone.

Permanent secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, assured the public that the situation is under control. He stated that the government is collaborating with NNPCL to safely isolate the affected pipeline.

A comprehensive integrity audit will be conducted on the pipeline before the facility is reactivated.

“The protection of lives and property remains our top priority,” Oke-Osanyintolu said, noting that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration has invested heavily in rapid response systems.

The government advised motorists to avoid the Agege Motor Road corridor and use alternative routes, such as Old Abeokuta Road and the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Officials also urged the public not to engage in panic buying of petroleum products, emphasizing that the pipeline incident poses no immediate threat to the state’s fuel supply.

Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity or pipeline vandalism to emergency services at 767 or 112. LASEMA plans to release a post-incident assessment once investigations conclude.
