The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Nigeria Schools Sports Federation (NSSF) marked a significant milestone in grassroots sports development.

Both organisations collaborated under the auspices of Olympic Solidarity to officially launch a national capacity-building seminar in Kano State.

This high-impact programme is designed to empower school sports officers and teachers using the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) toolkits—a specialised framework developed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to integrate the values of excellence, friendship, and respect into the classroom and onto the playing field.

According to a statement issued on Thursday morning by Tony Nezianya, the public relations officer of the NOC, no fewer than 100 teachers and various sports officers from across Kano attended the seminar, which concluded on Wednesday.

One of the highly respected IOC-certified experts, Professor Abiodun Moronfolu, led the resource persons for the programme.

The Kano seminar is the first in a three-part series designed to transform the landscape of school sports across Nigeria.

According to Mrs Olabisi Joseph, the next event in the series will be held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, from 18th to 20th May, while the Lagos event will take place from 2nd to 4th June 2026.

She noted that schools were important as the foundation for grassroots sports development and the gateway to achieving elite sports.

Mrs Kemi Obidahunsi, an Assistant Secretary from the NOC in charge of the NSSF, coordinated the event.

Engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel joined the President of the NSSF, Mrs Olabisi Joseph, and invited officials during the official opening ceremony.
