The Atlanta Dream have officially signed Nigerian forward Amy Okonkwo to a developmental contract as they prepare for the upcoming WNBA season.

The move brings one of Africa’s most accomplished women’s basketball players to the league, adding both depth and international pedigree to the Dream’s frontcourt.

Okonkwo, a cornerstone of Nigeria’s national team, D’Tigress, is the reigning Women’s AfroBasket Most Valuable Player.

Her dominant performances throughout the AfroBasket Championship were instrumental in securing yet another continental title for Nigeria, reaffirming the team’s status as Africa’s dominant force in women’s basketball. Known for her versatility, physicality, and scoring ability as a powerful forward, Okonkwo has consistently been a matchup problem for opponents across the continent.

The developmental contract marks another milestone in Okonkwo’s rising career, which has seen her evolve into one of Africa’s premier talents. While the deal is not a full WNBA roster spot, it provides her with access to the Dream’s training facilities, coaching staff, and preseason activities—offering a pathway to potentially earn a more permanent role in the league.

Beyond her individual achievement, the signing is expected to provide a major boost to Nigeria’s national team preparations.

With the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup scheduled to take place later this year in Berlin, Germany, Okonkwo’s exposure to WNBA-level training and competition will likely enhance her leadership and on-court skills.

That experience could prove vital for D’Tigress as they aim to make a deep international run.

For the Atlanta Dream, adding a player of Okonkwo’s caliber—even on a developmental deal—signals a continued investment in global talent. Her international experience, rebounding tenacity, and ability to stretch the floor could make her a valuable asset during training camp and beyond.

As the WNBA season approaches, all eyes will be on Okonkwo to see if she can translate her AfroBasket MVP form into a successful transition to the professional ranks in the United States.
