Corberán Hails Sadiq As Key Catalyst In Valencia’s Resurgence

In the midst of Valencia’s dramatic fight for survival, head coach Carlos Corberán has singled out Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq for special praise, crediting the forward with playing a pivotal role in the team’s remarkable turnaround since his arrival.

Sadiq, who completed a permanent switch from Real Sociedad to the Mestalla in January, has quickly become a fan favorite. The 29-year-old’s impact was never more evident than in last weekend’s crucial clash against Champions League-chasing Athletic Bilbao.

Introduced as a second-half substitute, Sadiq displayed a poacher’s instinct, netting the match’s solitary goal to secure a gritty 1-0 victory for Los Che. That strike marked his fourth goal in Valencia colors since his winter move, underscoring his growing influence in Corberán’s attacking setup.

The victory over Bilbao has injected fresh belief into a side that has spent much of the season hovering dangerously above the drop zone.

With just three rounds of fixtures remaining in La Liga, Valencia now find themselves four points clear of the relegation places—a slender but vital buffer that has shifted the mood from desperation to cautious optimism.

Speaking to futbolfantasy, Corberán was effusive in his appraisal of the Nigerian international, highlighting not only his on-field contributions but also his off-field personality.

“Sadiq is an exceptional boy, a player in whom a sense of humor is part of his very essence.

“I don’t want to change it, nor am I going to change it, nor do I intend to change it. That’s who he is, and that authenticity brings something unique to our dressing room.”

Corberán went on to explain the strategic thinking behind Sadiq’s recruitment, noting that the forward’s loan spell at Valencia last season left a lasting impression on the coaching staff.

“He’s here at the club because we really liked what he gave us last year,” the coach added. “He offers the team very good options—physically, technically, and in terms of character. We’re extremely happy with that.”

As Valencia prepare for their final three league fixtures, Sadiq’s ability to deliver in high-pressure moments—combined with the unwavering support of his manager—could prove to be the deciding factor in preserving the club’s top-flight status.

For now, the Mestalla faithful are simply enjoying watching a revival led by an unlikely hero with an infectious smile and a knack for scoring decisive goals.
