Nigerian Legion Denies N65m Fund Diversion Allegation, Threatens Legal Action

The Nigerian Legion has denied allegations of the diversion of N65 million meant for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) celebration, dismissing reports suggesting an internal crisis and the resignation of senior officials within the organisation.

In a statement issued by its Director of Corporate Affairs, A.A. Soaga-Adetoro, the Legion described the reports as false and misleading, warning that it may take legal action against the online platform responsible for the publication.

The reports, titled, “Crisis Rocks Nigerian Legion: COS, Directors Resign,” and “Alleged N65m AFRD Fund Diversion Sparks Legion Crisis,” were published on May 13 and 14, 2026.

Reacting to the claims, Soaga-Adetoro said the exit of some officers from the organisation was part of an ongoing restructuring process aimed at repositioning the Legion under a new management structure.

She stressed that the changes were routine and not linked to any internal crisis.

“Some officers left the Nigerian Legion as part of a broader restructuring and to align the organisation with a new strategic direction. This has nothing to do with any crisis, as it is a normal practice within military and paramilitary organisations whenever new management takes over,” she said.

She explained that the Legion was currently undergoing reforms focused on improving veterans’ welfare, restructuring the Corps of Commissionaires, and strengthening its security operations under the leadership of the National Chairman, Ms. Grace Morenike Henry.

The organisation also rejected allegations that N65 million meant for AFRD activities was missing, insisting that all funds received were fully accounted for.

“The allegation of N65m AFRD missing funds is grossly exaggerated, as many donors are yet to fulfil their pledges to the Nigerian Legion. All money within the coffers of the organisation can be accounted for to date,” she stated.

Soaga-Adetoro urged media organisations to uphold professional ethics by verifying information with appropriate authorities before publication.

She warned that the spread of inaccurate and unverified reports could undermine public trust and create unnecessary confusion.

“Legal action may be taken against Eye Reporters and its handlers if attempts to portray the Nigerian Legion in bad light through falsehood do not stop forthwith,” she added.
