Alternative Sound artiste Johnny Drille has released a new album titled ‘Before The Morning Light’.
The musician, whose songs have soothed nerves, said he took him a long while to release the new body of work, which features nine artistes collaborating.
”5 years ago, I released my last album. Thank you for riding with me this whole time. My new album “Before The Morning Light” made with some of the most incredible artistes I know will finally be yours.
Johnny Drille’s uniqueness lies in his authenticity. He never forced himself into the standard Afrobeats mould to get radio spins; instead, he stood his ground, trusted his pen, and forced the mainstream to bend to his world. He proved that Nigerian music isn’t a monolith, opening the doors for a whole new generation of alternative and indie-folk artists in the country.
The first album arrangement is ‘In Time’ featuring the African diva, Angelique Kidjo. Others include Mind, Blown Away, a potential hit titled ‘Colorado’ ft Ayra Starr and Young Jonn.
The 5th track ‘Chokehold’ features Toronto-based R&B singer, Aqyila. Others include Last Forever, No Yawa, Angelina ft Fireboy, Tiwa Savage collaborated with Johnny Drille in ‘Over The Moon’, ‘What is this Love’ features Nonso Amadi. Lojay also collaborated with him on the song, Speak Up’.
The singer indeed has broken bounds. No wonder Don Jazzy brought him under his wings. How many Nigerian alternative artists can consistently sell out arenas and parks just on the strength of live, acoustic performances? Johnny’s Room Live has become a cultural staple in cities like Lagos and Abuja.
It’s not just a concert; it’s an immersive, intimate experience where thousands of fans gather not to dance to heavy basslines, but to sing every single lyric back to him in perfect harmony. It proved to the entire industry that there is a massive, hungry market for alternative, soul-stirring live music in Nigeria.
