Nigeria Super League got off to an exciting start in Lagos on Saturday as Northern Lions and Middle-Belt Tigers recorded impressive victories on the opening day of the inaugural competition at the TBS Cricket Oval.

Northern Lions claimed the first win in the history of the tournament after defeating Southern Sharks by four wickets in the opening fixture.

Southern Sharks, who won the toss and elected to bat, endured a difficult start against a disciplined Northern Lions bowling attack. Reigneth Osagie struck early to reduce the Sharks to 6/2 inside the opening over, putting the batting side immediately under pressure.

Danladi Isaac attempted to rebuild the innings with a patient 26 off 33 deliveries, while Akhigbe Miracle contributed 22 runs in the middle order. However, the Sharks struggled to establish substantial partnerships and were eventually bowled out for 89 in their allotted 20 overs.

Northern Lions captain Okpe Sylvester delivered an outstanding all-round display, taking 3 wickets for just 9 runs. Reigneth Osagie and Beki Mubarak Kehinde also impressed with three and two wickets respectively.

In reply, wicketkeeper-batsman Hosanna Omokhobhio anchored the chase with a composed 30 off 24 balls, including three boundaries and a six. Sylvester added a brisk 20 off 15 deliveries to keep the innings on course.

Although Southern Sharks fought back through Danladi Isaac and Isesele Odion Evangel, who both claimed three wickets, Northern Lions reached 92/6 in 15.4 overs to seal a four-wicket victory.

The second match of the day also produced an entertaining contest as Middle-Belt Tigers edged Western Dolphins by four wickets.

Middle-Belt Tigers captain Runsewe Sulaimon led the bowling effort with figures of 2/17, while Abolarin Abdulrasheed Ayomide, Ndubudem, Eghosa Aghedo Destiny and Ogunnaike Folajuwon claimed one wicket each.

The Tigers successfully chased down the target in 18.5 overs, thanks largely to an unbeaten 33 from Solomon Chilemanya, who struck two fours and two sixes in a confident innings.

Sulaimon also played a composed knock as Middle-Belt Tigers reached 131/6 to round off an impressive opening day in the Nigeria Super League.
