Abdu Maikaba, the newly appointed head coach of Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, has expressed profound gratitude and a strong sense of duty following his appointment. The seasoned tactician, named as the team’s new gaffer just two weeks ago, describes the role as both a privilege and a significant challenge.

Maikaba, who brings a wealth of experience to the position, will lead the seven-time African champions at the upcoming 2025 WAFU B U-20 Championship scheduled for July. His appointment comes at a crucial juncture as Nigeria aims to maintain its dominance on the continent and secure a berth in global youth competitions.

Before stepping into the top job, Maikaba previously served as an assistant coach with the Flying Eagles as well as with Nigeria’s U-17 side, the Golden Eaglets. His familiarity with the country’s youth football structure and his long-standing commitment to nurturing young talent have been highlighted as key factors in his elevation.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Maikaba opened up about what the new role signifies to him.

“I am deeply honoured for this role as Head Coach of the Nigeria U-20 Flying Eagles,” he wrote. “To lead this team is a massive responsibility and a privilege I do not take lightly. Nigeria’s football history is built on passion, grit, and talent.”

The experienced coach added that he is fully aware of the expectations that accompany leading one of Africa’s most successful youth teams, and he vowed to give his utmost to uphold the nation’s footballing pride. His immediate focus will be on preparing the squad for the WAFU B qualifiers, where the Flying Eagles will aim to secure a spot at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
