Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo, has expressed his excitement about finally making his debut for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, following official confirmation from FIFA regarding his change of international allegiance.

On April 6, 2026, world football’s governing body documented Okonkwo’s switch from England to Nigeria on its Change of Association platform.

This ruling now clears the way for the 24-year-old shot-stopper to feature for the three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions.

Although Okonkwo represented England at youth level between 2015 and 2019—playing for the U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-18 teams—he never earned a senior cap for the Three Lions. That lack of a senior appearance allowed him to change nationality under FIFA’s eligibility rules.

The 24-year-old is widely expected to be named in Nigeria’s squad for this month’s Unity Cup in London. Speaking on Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) TV, Okonkwo shared his joy and anticipation.

“It’s an honour to be given the opportunity to play for your country. I’m excited—I can’t wait,” he said. “I’ve been wanting this moment for quite a while now, and to finally have the opportunity is incredible.”

Born in Camden, London, to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo’s football journey began at Hampstead Academy before moving to Lindus Park. In 2009, at just eight years old, he joined Arsenal’s academy. He rose quickly through the ranks, sitting on the bench for the under-18s while still registered with the under-15 team.

As a 17-year-old, he made his debut for Arsenal’s under-23 side. During the 2018–19 season, he finished as runner-up in the U18 Premier League and regularly served as a bench option for the first team. Heading into the 2019–20 campaign, he was third in line for goalkeeping duties.

In early July 2021, Okonkwo signed a senior contract with Arsenal, taking the number 33 shirt. He made his first-team debut on 13 July 2021 in a friendly against Hibernian.

His time at the Emirates came to an end on 30 June 2024, when his contract expired, leading him to join Wrexham. Now, with his international future settled, he is finally poised to wear the green and white of Nigeria.
