Kogi State Police Command has intercepted a large consignment of suspected illicit drugs on the Kabba axis of the state and arrested two suspects in connection with the crime.

Addressing journalists at the command’s headquarters in Lokoja, yesterday, the commissioner of police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, said the breakthrough was recorded by operatives of the Kabba Area Command as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and other criminal activities in the state.

According to the CP, “the operation was carried out on May 9, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m. during a routine stop-and-search exercise by officers attached to the Area Command, Kabba.”

He disclosed that the operatives intercepted a Honda Pilot Jeep with registration number LSD 456 GE, driven by one Chris Amos, 52, while one Bilat Joseph was seated as a passenger.

Kankarofi said a thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 342 wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp concealed inside the vehicle.

The police commissioner explained that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects allegedly picked up the consignment from Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State on the instruction of an individual identified simply as “Alhaji,” whose full identity and whereabouts are still unknown.

“The suspects further stated that the illicit substance was to be delivered in Yola, Adamawa State,” he said.

He added that the suspects are currently in police custody while the recovered exhibits have been secured for further investigation.

The CP noted that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal network and ensure diligent prosecution of all persons connected with the crime.

Kankarofi reiterated that illicit drug trafficking remains one of the major factors fueling violent crimes and criminality in society, stressing that the Command would sustain aggressive operations aimed at dismantling criminal syndicates operating within and across the state.

He assured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property through proactive policing, intelligence gathering and collaboration with other security agencies and members of the public.

The commissioner also appreciated the Inspector-General of Police for his support and strategic leadership, as well as the Governor of Kogi State for supporting security operations in the state.

He further commended residents of Kogi State for their cooperation and timely provision of credible information to security agencies.
