Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi is brimming with excitement after Hull City clinched promotion to the Premier League, capping off an incredible season with a dramatic victory at Wembley. The Tigers triumphed 1-0 over Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final on Saturday afternoon, sealing their return to English football’s top flight for the first time since their relegation in 2017.

The decisive moment arrived five minutes into added time when reliable forward Oli McBurnie capitalised on a fumble by Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn, firing home from close range to send the Hull City faithful into raptures.

Nigeria international Ajayi, whose composed presence in central defence proved vital for Sergej Jakirovic’s side, delivered an impressive performance in the keenly contested encounter. He took to social media to celebrate the monumental win, exclaiming on his Instagram page: “God is the greatest. We did it. Up the Tigers.”

The former Rotherham United star’s commanding defensive display was instrumental in navigating a tense final that offered few clear-cut opportunities in the opening 45 minutes. Ajayi completed 18 accurate passes, registered six crucial clearances, and prevailed in two key ground duels. He also made two important headed clearances, effectively nullifying Middlesbrough’s attacking threats in the sweltering London heat.

The 32-year-old centre-back, who joined Hull City on a free transfer last summer, made 22 appearances in the 2025/26 season, contributing one goal and one assist. Ajayi brings previous Premier League experience to the squad, having featured in the top tier during his time with West Bromwich Albion. He signed a two-year contract with the Tigers after ending his six-year stint with the Baggies.
