rapper Robert Ginyard, popularly known as Rob Base, has passed away at the age of 59 after a private battle with cancer.
The hip-hop star, who became famous as part of the music group Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, died on Friday surrounded by his family, just four days after his birthday.
His family confirmed the sad news in a statement on Instagram, describing him as a loving father, friend, and creative person whose music will never be forgotten.
Ginyard grew up in Harlem, New York, where he met his music partner, DJ E-Z Rock (Rodney Bryce), in primary school. Together, they started making music from scratch, recording early songs before becoming successful. DJ E-Z Rock passed away earlier in 2014.
The duo played a major role in making hip-hop music popular in the late 1980s. Their 1988 hit song, “It Takes Two,” became very famous and is considered one of the most important songs in rap history. The song has been used by global stars like Snoop Dogg and The Black Eyed Peas. The duo was also known for other hit dance songs like Joy and Pain and Get on the Dance Floor.
