Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from professional football at age 39, after failing to recover from a serious shoulder injury. The Celtic and Denmark goalkeeper had been sidelined since February, and following consultations with surgeons, he made the difficult decision to end his playing career.

“I believe that now is the right time,” Schmeichel, the son of Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel, told Danish outlet TV2. “But honestly, this is a decision that has been made for me.”

The injury first occurred during a Nations League quarter-final defeat to Portugal in March 2025. Schmeichel continued playing because Denmark had already used all their substitutes. He aggravated the problem 11 months later in Celtic’s Europa League loss to Stuttgart.

Schmeichel had been determined to extend his career, even facing the prospect of up to a year of rehabilitation. But after seeking multiple medical opinions, the verdict was clear. “I didn’t realize how bad it was back in March,” he said. “When I landed on it in February, I knew straight away something was seriously wrong. The surgeons and experts have told me I should not expect to return to top-flight football.”

Schmeichel, who started his career at Manchester City, retires with 120 Denmark caps. He played in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and helped Denmark reach the Euro 2020 semifinals. This season, he made 39 appearances for Celtic, earning his second Scottish Premiership winner’s medal in two years in Glasgow.

His club career was defined by a decade at Leicester City, where he won the Premier League in 2016 and the FA Cup in 2021. Later stints at Nice and Anderlecht preceded his move to Scotland.
