Nigeria’s rising tennis star, Seun Ogunsakin, made an impressive start to his Roland Garros debut on Thursday after defeating France’s Lenny Couturier in the boys’ singles qualifying round.
Ogunsakin overcame the home favourite in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, in a match that lasted about one hour and 30 minutes, boosting his chances of progressing to the main draw of the junior tournament.
The 17-year-old Nigerian dominated from the baseline in the opening set, taking early control of the contest and dictating the pace of play against his French opponent.
The second set proved more competitive as Couturier, backed by the home crowd, attempted to stage a comeback.
However, Ogunsakin remained composed under pressure, matching his opponent in long rallies and maintaining his intensity throughout the encounter.
The Nigerian sealed victory with crucial winners late in the match and held firmly on his service games to close out the second set 6-4.
The win moves Ogunsakin closer to securing a place in the main draw as he awaits his opponent for the final round of qualifying, scheduled for Friday.
The result marks another significant milestone in the youngster’s growing international junior career as he continues to emerge as one of Africa’s promising tennis prospects on the global stage.
The Ekiti-born player has enjoyed an impressive run on the junior circuit this season.
Among his recent achievements was his triumph at the ITF J200 Africa Regional Championship in Cairo, Egypt, where he defeated Botswana’s Ntungamili Raguin in the final to win one of the biggest titles of his career so far.
