Victor Wembanyama delivered a commanding performance on Friday night, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 118-91 victory over the reigning NBA champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and setting up a decisive seventh game in the Western Conference Finals.
Following a lacklustre outing in Game 5, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson challenged the 22-year-old Frenchman to score more than 20 points. Wembanyama rose to the occasion, finishing with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks as San Antonio seized control early and maintained their dominance, levelling the series at 3-3.
Wembanyama exited the game with just under eight minutes left in the third quarter, having ignited a 20-0 Spurs run. Johnson later commended his star’s “passion and desire,” as well as his willingness to take “responsibility” for the team’s turnaround.
Stephon Castle contributed 17 points, nine assists, and only one turnover, while Dylan Harper added 18 points off the bench.
Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored 32 points in Game 5, was restricted to just 15 points and four assists on 6-of-18 shooting. This marked his lowest scoring output since a 14-point performance in Game 3 of the 2025 Western Conference Finals against Minnesota.
The two-time NBA MVP is now shooting only 37.9% from the field in the series, a significant drop from the 51.4% he achieved during the first two rounds of the playoffs.
Game 7 is scheduled for Saturday, 30 May, in Oklahoma City (Sunday 01:00), with the victor advancing to face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.
