Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has received a heartwarming personal lift ahead of Nigeria’s Unity Cup final against Jamaica after welcoming his first child.
The 22-year-old centre-back became a father just days before Saturday’s eagerly anticipated clash against the Reggae Boyz, with his Turkish club Trabzonspor announcing the birth of his daughter, Jacinta.
In a statement published on the club’s official website, Trabzonspor congratulated the defender and his partner Melissa on the arrival of their baby girl.
“Our football player Chibuike Nwaiwu and Melissa have had a daughter today,” the statement read.
“We wholeheartedly congratulate Chibuike Nwaiwu on the joy of becoming a father and wish their little one, whom they named Jacinta, a healthy and happy life.”
The joyful news comes during a memorable period in Nwaiwu’s career. The former Enyimba defender featured prominently in Nigeria’s 2-0 Unity Cup semi-final victory over Zimbabwe, forming a solid partnership with Slavia Prague defender Igoh Ogbu at the heart of the Super Eagles defence.
With Nigeria producing an assured display against Zimbabwe, head coach Éric Chelle is expected to retain much of the same starting line-up for the final at The Valley.
Nwaiwu’s rise has been impressive since leaving Enyimba in 2024. He quickly established himself at Austrian side Wolfsberger AC, helping the club secure the Austrian Cup before earning a move to Trabzonspor in January.
Since arriving in Turkey, the former Heartland defender has played a significant role in Trabzonspor’s third-place league finish and Turkish Cup triumph, adding further silverware to his growing career.
