Atletico Madrid have taken an extraordinary swipe at rivals Barcelona amid growing speculation linking Argentine striker Julian Alvarez with a move to the Catalan club, launching a series of sarcastic social media posts that quickly went viral.

The Madrid club mocked reports of Barcelona’s interest in Alvarez by jokingly submitting a fictional transfer offer for teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

According to reports, Barcelona have opened discussions over a potential move for Alvarez, with the Argentine forward reportedly viewed as a major attacking target. However, Atletico are understood to be unwilling to entertain an offer in the region of €90 million (£77.9 million) for the 26-year-old striker.

In response, Atletico unleashed an online campaign dripping with sarcasm and aimed squarely at their La Liga rivals.

The club’s first post proposed a humorous exchange for Yamal, offering “four tickets” to a Bad Bunny concert, an annual subscription to Spanish newspaper ABC, and a bag of sunflower seeds.

“We have sent a fax to FC Barcelona with our transfer offer: four tickets for tomorrow’s Bad Bunny concert, an annual subscription to ABC and a bag of sunflower seeds,” Atletico wrote.

“We eagerly await the response to prepare the ‘announce’.”

The satire did not stop there.

Atletico followed up with additional mock offers for several Barcelona stars, complete with AI-generated images showing the players in Atletico colours.

For midfielder Pedri, the offer was upgraded to six concert tickets, while Brazilian winger Raphinha was the subject of another tongue-in-cheek proposal involving a season-long loan exchange featuring “Tom Ford and Smith” — a playful reference to an earlier mistake by Atletico president Enrique Cerezo, who accidentally mentioned the names as players linked with the club.

The posts, shared over little more than an hour, exploded online and reportedly reached more than 55 million feeds on X.

However, the tone later shifted from humour to pointed criticism.

Atletico accused Barcelona of fuelling a “smear campaign” against one of their players, alleging deliberate leaks and misinformation designed to influence transfer narratives.

“In recent months, we’ve been suffering a smear campaign against one of our players,” the club said.

“Leaked information with ulterior motives, fake news, constant disrespect and the propaganda machine inventing stories.”

The club then delivered its sharpest jab, appearing to reference Barcelona’s ongoing legal scrutiny surrounding alleged payments to former referees’ committee vice-president Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira and long-running debates over player registration issues.

“But of course,” Atletico added, “it wouldn’t occur to us to have the referees’ vice-president on our payroll or resort to political favours to register players. Respect and values.”

Barcelona have consistently denied wrongdoing in the Negreira case, while investigations remain ongoing.

The latest exchange adds another chapter to the tense relationship between the Spanish giants, whose rivalry has previously flared during high-profile transfer sagas, notably the controversial move involving Antoine Griezmann in 2019.

Alvarez, who joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal worth up to £81.5 million, has enjoyed an impressive campaign, scoring 20 goals across all competitions and further strengthening his importance to Diego Simeone’s side.
