The Lagos State Police Command has debunked a viral video circulating on social media claiming that Fulani men were recently arrested in Ikorodu with firearms and ammunition, describing the footage as old and misleading.

The Command, in a statement issued on Sunday, clarified that the video does not relate to any recent security operation in Lagos State and urged residents to disregard the claims accompanying the footage.

“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to state unequivocally that the video currently circulating on social media platforms depicting the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is an old clip of an incident that occurred over three (3) years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State,” the statement read.

According to the police, the recirculation of the old footage as a recent incident is capable of causing unnecessary panic and anxiety among residents.

“The recirculation of such outdated content as a recent occurrence is misleading, capable of creating unnecessary panic, fear, and apprehension among residents,” the Command stated.

The police urged members of the public to verify information before sharing it, particularly on social media platforms, warning against the spread of unverified content.

“The Command therefore urges members of the public to disregard the video and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of undermining public confidence and peace,” it added.

The Command also warned that individuals deliberately spreading false information would face legal consequences.

“The Command further warns social media users and content creators against the dissemination of false, unverified, and alarmist stories capable of causing public disorder. Individuals found deliberately spreading misinformation or fake news will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, directed the intensification of security operations across the state to ensure the safety of residents.

According to the statement, the commissioner ordered “sustained and enhanced deployment of Police personnel and operational assets to identified black spots, strategic locations, and all entry and exit points across the state.”

The Command said the deployment forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security and reassure residents of adequate protection.

“These proactive security measures are being carried out in close collaboration with other security and safety agencies to ensure the continued safety and security of all residents and visitors in Lagos State,” it stated.

Residents were urged to remain calm and continue their lawful activities without fear, as adequate security measures have been put in place to protect lives and property.

The police also called on the public to support security agencies by providing credible and timely intelligence on suspicious activities within their communities.

The Command reiterated that the viral video originated from an incident that occurred over three years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Lagos State.
