In a landmark moment for Ukrainian tennis, Marta Kostyuk battled past fellow countrywoman Elina Svitolina on Tuesday, securing a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory and becoming the first woman from Ukraine ever to reach the semifinals at the French Open.

The rain-delayed quarterfinal was the first meeting between two Ukrainians at Roland Garros. Now 23 years old, Kostyuk will next face 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva for a spot in the final.

“We had another very difficult night in Ukraine, especially in Kyiv,” an emotional Kostyuk said afterward. “I want to dedicate this win to the Ukrainian people.”

Earlier in the tournament, Kostyuk broke down in tears after her opening-round victory, revealing that a missile had struck close to her family’s home just hours before she took the court.

Svitolina, 31, arrived in Paris riding high after capturing the Italian Open title—where she stunned reigning French Open champion Coco Gauff.

With 20 career WTA trophies, the veteran seemed poised for a deep run. But she faded in the decisive third set as Kostyuk’s relentless speed and aggressive defense took command.

The No. 15 seed has now won 16 consecutive matches on clay, adding two tournament titles along the way.

After the match, Kostyuk paid tribute to Svitolina’s influence on Ukrainian tennis. “I want to thank her again for this incredible match,” she said.
