Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, says she performed close to her peak during Sunday’s Rabat Diamond League event, where she secured her first win of the season and shattered the meeting record.

Amusan blazed to victory in 12.28 seconds, erasing her own previous meeting mark and matching the season-leading time she had already set earlier this year.

After a runner-up finish in Xiamen, the Nigerian standout improved to first place in Rabat, finishing ahead of Devynne Charlton (12.40) in second and Nadine Visser (12.47) in third.

The 12.28-second clocking now stands as the joint third-fastest performance of Amusan’s career.

Her legendary 12.12 world record, achieved at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, remains her all-time best, followed by the 12.24 she posted at last year’s Meeting de Paris.

The meeting record came as an unexpected bonus for Amusan, who has been steadily building momentum throughout the season.

“I’m very happy with the outcome. Honestly, I felt I ran close to my full capability. Winning was the priority, and breaking the meeting record is a fantastic extra,” she told the Diamond League website.

She added, “The energy in Rabat is amazing, and the crowd was absolutely electric. I’ve raced here many times, and the support is always unique. Going forward, I just want to stay injury-free for the next competitions and keep delivering at a high level.”

Amusan arrived at the Diamond League circuit fresh off her fourth consecutive African title. With each outing, she has shown clear improvement as she targets both the Diamond League final and the Commonwealth Games later this year.

A three-time Diamond League champion (2021, 2022, 2023), Amusan now aims to recapture the season crown.
