Harry Kane leads the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or after a prolific season with Bayern Munich, but Kylian Mbappé and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal are among the leading challengers for football’s most prestigious individual award.
The 70th edition of the Ballon d’Or takes place at the London Palladium in the United Kingdom on Monday, October 26, marking the first time the ceremony will be held outside France.
The red-carpet event is scheduled to begin at 18:00 GMT, with the main ceremony starting at 20:00 GMT. Former France striker Thierry Henry and broadcaster Kate Scott will co-host the event, which will feature performances by French Montana and Jorja Smith.
The awards will recognise performances during the 2025–26 football season, covering the period from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026, rather than the calendar year.
Kane Leads Contenders
England captain Kane enters the ceremony as a leading contender following a remarkable campaign with Bayern Munich.
The striker reportedly scored 73 goals during the season, helping the German champions win the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup.
His individual scoring exploits and contributions to Bayern’s domestic success have strengthened his case for the award, although his international achievements will also feature in the debate surrounding the leading candidates.
Kane’s hopes will be measured against those of Real Madrid forward Mbappé, whose prolific goalscoring record and World Cup Golden Boot have made him another major contender.
The France international remains one of the most influential attacking players in world football, with his ability to deliver on the biggest stages adding weight to his candidacy.
Yamal Targets Historic Recognition
Barcelona teenager Yamal is also among the leading names expected to challenge for the award after another impressive campaign for club and country.
The Spanish forward starred in Spain’s World Cup-winning campaign and contributed to Barcelona’s domestic success, further enhancing his reputation as one of football’s brightest young talents.
A victory would represent another landmark achievement in the teenager’s rapidly developing career.
Star-Studded Field
Other notable nominees include Ousmane Dembélé, Rodri, Erling Haaland, Vinícius Júnior, Lionel Messi and William Saliba.
The breadth of the field reflects the competition among established superstars and emerging talents for individual recognition following the 2025–26 season.
With Kane’s goalscoring exploits, Mbappé’s attacking brilliance and Yamal’s emergence among the major talking points, the London ceremony is set to reveal whether the award goes to an established superstar or a new face of world football
