Some soldiers of the 162 Battalion of the Nigerian Army were attacked by Boko Haram terrorists yesterday along the Mandara–Buratai road in Borno State.
According to a military source, the insurgents attacked the troops around 4:00 a.m. on Friday amid heavy rainfall.
Local sources claimed that several of the soldiers were killed, but this was not independently verified at press time, neither did the Nigerian Army issue an official statement on the incident at the time of filing this report.
However, military sources confirmed that casualty figures remained under review as assessment operations continued.
A military source at the location said the attackers overran parts of the facility. Casualties were reportedly recorded among personnel stationed at the base, while several others sustained injuries.
Reinforcement troops were later deployed to the area to stabilise the situation, secure the base and evacuate wounded soldiers, according to security officials familiar with the response operation.
