Elder Paul Bassey, Akwa Ibom State’s Commissioner for Sports, has expressed optimism regarding Ibom Angels’ progress in the ongoing Federation Cup. He commended the women’s team for reaching the quarter-finals after successfully navigating the group stages.
Commissioner Bassey delivered his praise during an unscheduled visit to the team’s morning training session at Uyo Township Stadium over the weekend. He aimed to boost the players’ morale and encourage officials to push for a place in the final and ultimately win the trophy.
Addressing the team, Mr Bassey stated his visit was to congratulate them on their recent victory over Bayelsa Queens and subsequent qualification for this year’s President Federation Cup quarter-finals.
LEADERSHIP Sunday recalled that in a keenly contested last-16 fixture in Awka on Tuesday, Olayini Wuraola had given Bayelsa Queens the lead before Mirian Okocha equalised for the Angels in the 83rd minute. The Uyo-based team, who have previously featured in two consecutive tournament finals, went on to triumph via a penalty shoot-out to secure their quarter-final spot.
“I am here, on behalf of His Excellency, the sports-friendly Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, to congratulate you on your recent good performances,” Mr Bassey said. “His Excellency is impressed with you, and I am here to remind you that you are never alone. We’re always with you, and we care about your welfare and well-being.”
Flanked by the State Football Association chairman, Mr Samuel Umoh, Mr Bassey urged the players not to let the victory go to their heads but to remain focused and continue working hard to win the coveted trophy.
The visit’s highlights included a cash donation to the team by the Commissioner and the presentation of gifts by Mrs Rosemary Ubia, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, who was also part of the entourage.
Ibom Angels are set to face Heartland Queens in the quarter-final, with the date and venue yet to be announced.
