The enduring legacy of late Nigerian football icon Stephen Keshi took centre stage in Lagos on Sunday as football stakeholders, admirers and former colleagues gathered for the 10th Stephen Keshi Memorial Lecture, celebrating the remarkable impact he made on Nigerian, African and global football.

The event, held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and themed “Celebrating Africa’s Football Legends for Tomorrow’s Aspirants,” featured glowing tributes to the former Super Eagles captain and coach, whose achievements continue to inspire generations of footballers across the continent.

Leading the tributes was former Nigerian international Segun Odegbami, who described Keshi as one of the greatest ambassadors Nigeria has ever produced and a pioneer whose influence extended far beyond the football pitch.

According to Odegbami, Keshi’s contribution to the development of African football remains unmatched.

“Stephen Keshi is a great Nigerian ambassador. He is an ambassador like no other,” Odegbami said during the lecture.

“The citation that was read about him only scratches the surface of the impact he had, not just on Nigerian football but on African football as a whole. His influence also extended to Black footballers around the world.”

Odegbami noted that Keshi was among the first African footballers to successfully establish himself in Europe and, in doing so, opened doors for countless others to follow.

He recalled how the former defender played a key role in facilitating the movement of African players to European leagues, often mentoring and supporting younger talents financially while serving as a role model.

“Keshi played a crucial role in the migration of African footballers to Europe. He was not only influencing the process; he was also funding some and leading by example,” Odegbami said.

“This was a man who would shuttle between Europe and Africa to honour national team commitments. He would play a match in Europe, fly to Africa for the Africa Cup of Nations, and then return to Europe again. His dedication to country and continent was extraordinary.”

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential football figures, Keshi enjoyed a distinguished playing career that saw him captain Nigeria to success before making history as a coach.

He remains one of the few individuals to have won the Africa Cup of Nations both as a player and a coach, leading Nigeria to continental glory in 1994 as captain and again in 2013 as head coach.

His achievements also included guiding the Super Eagles to qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and helping elevate the profile of African coaches on the international stage.

While the occasion was primarily dedicated to celebrating Keshi’s life and legacy, Odegbami also reflected on the current state of Nigerian football, expressing disappointment over the country’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite Africa being allocated a record 10 places.

He described the situation as painful and humiliating for a nation with such a rich football heritage.

“It is a shame that 10 countries from Africa are going to the World Cup and Nigeria is not one of them,” he said.

“We must not allow this to continue because Nigeria’s football story remains one of the greatest on the continent.”

Despite his concerns about the present, Odegbami insisted that the lessons from Keshi’s life provide a blueprint for the future of Nigerian football.

He urged aspiring footballers, administrators and coaches to emulate the discipline, commitment and leadership qualities that defined the former Super Eagles captain throughout his career.

A decade after his passing, Keshi’s influence continues to resonate across Africa, with many at the memorial lecture agreeing that his achievements, courage and pioneering spirit remain a benchmark for excellence in the game.

For those gathered in Lagos, the occasion was not only a remembrance of a football legend but also a celebration of a man whose legacy continues to shape the future of African football.
