The Oyo State House of Assembly has called for urgent and massive deployment of security personnel to public and private schools across the state following recent abductions of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

The resolution was reached during Tuesday’s plenary after lawmakers expressed concern over rising insecurity around educational institutions, particularly the attacks on Community High School, Esiele, and L.A. Primary School, Yawota.

The motion was moved by the lawmaker representing Ibadan South-West State Constituency II, Oluwafemi Oluwafowokanmi, who urged the state government to immediately strengthen security around schools to prevent further incidents.

Raising concern over the safety of students, teachers and school facilities, Oluwafowokanmi said the recent abductions had heightened fear among residents and exposed vulnerabilities in the protection of learning environments.

Following deliberations, the lawmakers unanimously resolved to call on the Executive Arm of Government to deploy operatives of the Oyo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, alongside the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies, to schools across the state.

The Assembly also recommended that the deployment should be phased, with priority given to schools in rural communities, border areas and locations close to forest reserves, which are often considered more vulnerable to criminal attacks.

In addition, the lawmakers urged the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) to work closely with security agencies to conduct comprehensive security audits of all public schools in the state.

They stressed that such collaboration was necessary to identify risk areas and strengthen preventive measures in order to safeguard learners and educational infrastructure across Oyo State.
