Netanyahu Ends Speculation, Declares Re-Election Ambition

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will seek re-election in Israel’s next general election, ending months of speculation over his political future as the country prepares for a national vote expected by late October.

The confirmation came from Netanyahu’s Likud party, which announced on Wednesday that the veteran leader would contest the election and expressed confidence in his chances of securing another term in office.

The announcement followed recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who questioned whether Netanyahu intended to remain in power after years of political challenges and military conflicts.

“I don’t know. He’s had an amazing career. Does he want to continue? Because, you know, he’s a wartime prime minister,” Trump said in an interview with ABC News.

Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, has led the country through multiple conflicts over the past three years and is currently overseeing military operations against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, while tensions involving Iran continue to shape the region’s security landscape.

His administration, however, has faced mounting criticism from opposition figures who argue that the government has failed to achieve key objectives outlined following Hamas’ October 2023 attack on Israel.

The prime minister is also contending with an ongoing corruption trial, which has remained a major source of political controversy throughout his tenure.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid has been among Netanyahu’s most vocal critics, accusing the government of failing to translate military gains into lasting strategic achievements.

Despite the criticism and growing political pressure, the Likud party maintained that Netanyahu remains its candidate for the upcoming election and is determined to seek another mandate from Israeli voters.

The decision sets the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched election, with Netanyahu seeking to extend his record as Israel’s longest-serving leader amid ongoing security, political and diplomatic challenges.
