Cross River State governor, Bassey Otu, said his administration has completed 127 kilometres of roads across the state without organising commissioning ceremonies.
Otu made the remarks on Friday in Calabar during a Democracy Day thanksgiving service at the Cathedral of Holy Trinity.
Represented by the state deputy governor, Dr Peter Odey, Otu stated that the projects reflected the administration’s commitment to service delivery rather than publicity.
“We have completed 127 kilometres of road without cutting a ribbon,” the governor stated .
The governor added that several of the completed roads projects are already yielding benefits to community residents in different parts of the state.
Otu averred that Cross River has become one of the most peaceful states in the country in recent times due to sustained investments in security.
The governor maintained that the government adopted both kinetic and non-kinetic measures to tackle criminal activities.
He stressed that about 171 criminals recently surrendered to security agencies after sustained pressure from government-backed security operations lauding governor commended security agencies for their collaboration and dedication in protecting lives and property.
Otu described democracy as a government driven by the people and urged citizens to keep supporting responsible leadership. He also paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Abiola and others who sacrificed for Nigeria’s democratic development.
In a sermon, the Anglican Bishop of Calabar Diocese, Rt. Rev. Nneoyi Egbe, urged public officeholders to serve with gratitude, humility and accountability.
He called for transparency and regular publication of budget performance reports.
In his remarks Commissioner for Information Dr Erasmus Ekpang added that Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democracy, despite its flaws, remains preferable to military rule.
